Bonsai B-En, the name is a play on my name and the “En” which means garden. It also doubles as my Initials “B” & “N”. (Nguyen is my last name). Coincidentally my Vietnamese name is Binh which means peaceful and calm or when used in context also means vessel or pot. The red Japanese character means “tree”
Art in definition has a broad spectrum, it can be a skill, craft, beauty, representation or expressionism even movement. With the art of Bonsai it touches on all these qualities but you have to add one more. Life. 

Some compare designing a bonsai to painting where the tree is the is the canvas, the wire and tools are your paint brush. However in my interpretation, a better comparison would be to call Bonsai the art of a slow dance between the artist and their tree. A tree is always growing but if we cut a branch it in turns develops growth in new areas. Slowly yet assuredly. As the artist we have to know the routine or else the performance is ruined by doing things out of turn. This dance can last years before we finally have something that can be shown. 

So is Bonsai Art? It is a resounding yes but it is also so much more depending on what your intentions are with Bonsai.

My experience with Bonsai started with my father in the 1990s. He was an avid hobbyist in Bonsai, Koi, Bird Keeping and talented Woodworker. We still have his trees to this day. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because my brothers and I all embody his love for the hobbies he introduced us to.
